Rachel Rom exhibition at Paris Photo L.A.

Fellow French photographer Rachel Rom, who recently collaborated with HG Issue for our Anthony Bannwart special, will present her first U.S. exhibition at this year’s Paris Photo L.A., which will be held at the Paramount Pictures Studios from May 1-3, 2015. The Central Saint Martins graduate will occupy the entire booth of Paris-based gallery E.G.P. (stand 06 – stage 14), showing old and new work. Rom has become famous for her conceptual approach on photography and her innovative use of light. Her photos, which are charged with cinematic mystery and existential power, aim to explore the very nature of portraiture, inviting us to lose ourselves in unexplored terrains and look at reality from a different angle.

Among the works on view will be “Naked Fragmented”, a series of photographs that depict the figure of a naked woman walking down the street, only that the image of the woman has been removed from the frame and has been placed alongside of it. According to the artist, this work refutes the notion of photography as a reproducible medium, challenging conventional ideas about the boundaries and limitations of a photograph. Apart from “Naked Fragmented”, a selection from Rom’s 2014 solo exhibitionFragments” will also be on view, including large scale photos and a series titled “Remanence Wall”.

Remanence Wall” will offer visitors to experience firsthand the interconnected nature of the artist’s work, and the way she uses fragments of older exhibitions within the context of her new ones, often re-photographing and re-using her own material. “Remanence Wall” features a series of photos that are mounted on a portion of wall from an older exhibition. The framed works are then placed on a wallpaper-like background that is composed of images displayed in an even earlier exhibition. This almost endless layering of imagery opens a creative dialogue with the artist’s past, allowing the passage of time to influence and alter profoundly each and every piece of her impressive work.
