Acne pays tribute to pioneer artist Hilma Af Klint with a special capsule collection

Acne jeans recently launched a ready-to-wear capsule collection for men and women, inspired by legendary abstract painter Hilma Af Klint. Af Klint’s influence is apparent in the color palette of Acne’s s/s 2014 menswear and womenswear collections and also in a wide selection of prints on shirts, jerseys, totes and scarves that reproduce her original paintings from the early 20th century. The Swedish artist, who was born in 1862, created an inventive geometric visual language that was greatly influenced by the new spirituality of the late 1800s, the esoteric and the occult. According to the brand, Af Klint wanted to visualize a higher union between the opposites of the polarized world, such as male and female, light and darkness, striving for reconciliation of contradictions, for unity and totality. Her work was a forerunner in the canon of non-objective art, years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian, and remained unknown to the wider public until a recent major exhibition, titled “ Hilma af Klint: A Pioneer of Abstraction”, at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm.

“The colors and the depth and beauty of Hilma af Klint’s universe will strike anyone who spends time with her art. Her story as a forgotten artist, who is suddenly being considered as one of the pioneers within abstract art, is dazzling. I feel very honored that the Hilma Af Klint foundation gave me the freedom to create a small collection based on some of her most important work,” says Jonny Johansson, Acne Studios Creative Director. “I felt this connection directly,” he continues, “She was a really cool woman and ahead of her time in the spiritual and abstract realms. She was New Age, in a way.” The collection, a boost of color and positive energy, is the perfect introduction to Hilma Af Klint’s creative universe and serves as a proof that her pioneer work, which can be understood in the wider context of the modernist search for new forms in artistic, spiritual, political and scientific systems at the beginnings of the 20th century, is an endless fountain of inspiration.
