Carine Roitfeld transforms celebrities into legendary icons for Harper’s Bazaar

Carine Roitfeld, strong>Harper’s Bazaar’s global fashion editor, has teamed up with celebrated photographer and advertising director Jean-Paul Goude for the magazine’s much awaited September 2015 issue, which is dedicated to some of the most inspirational icons of all time. Roitfeld and Goude tapped Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chris Lee, Dakota Johnson, Jessica Chastain, Willow Smith and male model Lucky Blue Smith, transforming them into their favorite heroes, from Aphrodite to Marie Antoinette, in a 17-page portfolio that will appear in all worldwide editions of Harper’s Bazaar.

Katy Perry channeled the spirit of Andy Warhol’s Pop Art portraits of Elizabeth Taylor, posing in the same hair and makeup. “An icon transcends time,” Perry said about Taylor. “Liz was so fabulous and decadent and had a style that evolved with the years…and I’m sure I’ll be married just as many times!Oprah Winfrey, on the other hand, was transformed into an ethereal version of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. “The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite spiritual tales, and Glinda is a spiritual goddess,” Winfrey told Bazaar. “I love when she says to Dorothy, ‘You’ve always had the power.’ That is the message for all of us: You’re born with it, you always have it. It doesn’t matter how many yellow brick roads you go down, it’s always right there in your heart.

Mariah Carey was portrayed as Marie Antoinette, although she stated that she is pretty much the opposite of the famous Queen of France, while 50 Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson posed as a modern version of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty and seduction. “In Greek mythology, Aphrodite is the primary image of feminine divine love,” she said. “To me, she embodies the power of love and pleasure, and represents the mystery and intricacy of women.” Bazaar’s special issue also features Jessica Chastain as Joan of Arc, Willow Smith as Kali, Chris Lee as Coco Chanel, Rosie Huntington Whiteley as Diana Vreeland, and Lucky Blue, the first ever male model to appear in Roitfeld’s “Icons” series, as Liberace.

Bringing icons to life is such a thrill and I am excited to share this year’s spectacular lineup alongside such a visionary like Jean-Paul Goude,” Roitfeld said about her latest fashion adventure. “We’ve really captured the spirit of each icon’s transformation in what I hope people will consider to be unforgettable fashion.” Bazaar’s September issue will hit the newsstands on August 18.
