CR Fashion book and amfAR Cannes gala go red, paying tribute to Marilyn Monroe

This year’s amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Fashion Show is going to be held on May 22 at the Hotel du Cap in Cannes and is curated for the third consecutive time by Carine Roitfeld, editor of CR Fashion book. Roitfeld chose to dedicate the show to the eternal glamour of Marilyn Monroe, using the color red as the main theme of the show in order to both symbolize and highlight the fight against AIDS. 35 fashion houses and fashion’s biggest models, among them Karlie Kloss, Toni Garrn, Arizona Muse and Daria Strokous, joined forces with Carine Roitfeld to present an all-red collection of gowns specially created for the amfAR gala. The event aims to raise HIV/AIDS awareness and funds to help amfAR find a cure. AmfAR is one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy. Since 1985, amfAR has invested more than $340 million in its programs and has awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.

Apart from the red-themed fashion show curated by Carine Roitfeld, amfAR’s flagship fundraiser Cinema Against AIDS, which is held each year since 1993 during the Cannes Film Festival, will also feature a live auction and performances by Lana del Rey and Aloe Blacc. Last year’s auction included a trip to space with Leonardo DiCaprio and a kiss from George Clooney, raising nearly $25 million in a single night to help amfAR in its continued fight to end the AIDS epidemic through innovative research. This year the event will be chaired by world known celebrities from cinema and fashion including John Travolta, Milla Jovovich, Harvey Weinstein and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and the expectations, as you can imagine, are really high.

“Marilyn Monroe searched for love all her life, and I think she would have been a big supporter of the foundation,” legendary fashion editor Carine Roitfeld told WWD. In celebration of this year’s amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Fashion Show, Carine Roitfeld and CR Fashion book recently published a series of artworks by fashion illustrator Lula, depicting a modern Marilyn Monroe dressed by fashion houses like Prada, Ralf Lauren, Valentino, Christopher Kane, Marchesa, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang. We leave you with the fantastic illustrations and with one of Marilyn’s quotes that fits perfectly the occasion: “Beneath the makeup and behind the smile I’m just a girl who wishes for the world.”—Marilyn Monroe
