Craig & Karl’s candy installation for the “Sweet as One” exhibition in Chengdu, China

In order to celebrate the Chinese New Year and, at the same time, raise awareness about the harsh reality of the underprivileged children in rural communities, design duo Craig & Karl, famous for their Suzy Menkes cartoon avatar and their collaborations with Kiehl’s, Colette, MCM and House of Holland, created a gigantic, 14,000 square foot candy carpet in Chengdu, China. The installation, which is made of 3 tons of colorful candies forming geometric patterns of blooming flowers and charming pandas, took 2,000 volunteers and five days to finish.

Curated by Hong Kong creative studio AllRightsReserved, famous for its 40-foot-tall rubber duck that has sailed in harbors from Hong Kong to Sao Paulo, the installation put a colorful touch to one of Chengdu’s most fashionable streets, home to Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and Ermenegildo Zegna’s flagship stores. Showing art’s transformative power, the organizers plan to donate 15,000 meals, as well as the candy from the installation, to the underprivileged children of the rural communities of Chengdu.
