Inside “The Style, Inspiration and Life of Oscar de la Renta” Assouline book

In celebration of the creative universe of one of the most acclaimed fashion designers ever, Assouline recently released “The Style, Inspiration and Life of Oscar de la Renta” monograph. The 208-page, hardcover book is an updated version of the original 2002 volume and traces Oscar de la Renta´s exciting career, from his beginnings at Cristóbal Balenciaga’s couture shop in Madrid and his short stay at Lanvin in Paris to his landing in New York and the launch of his eponymous ready to wear line that made him internationally famous. It features outtakes from Oscar de la Renta’s personal archives, including photographs of his muses and personal pictures of his homes and gardens, as well as a wide selection of images from fashion editorials and advertising campaigns. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, Oscar de la Renta soon captivated the fashion industry with his ravishing talent and timeless elegance, with critics exalting his ability to make haute couture plausible in ready-to-wear. Throughout his 50 year career he has dressed practically everyone in the celebrity world, with Vogue calling him the “guru of glamour” and dedicating hundreds of pages to his inspiring work.

“I design clothes for women to wear. I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes,” declared Oscar de la Renta back in 1963 and his remarkable ability to make women look feminine and attractive is still one of his trademarks. “The Style, Inspiration and Life of Oscar de la Renta” features quotes from Sarah Jessica Parker, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Taylor Swift, and Oprah Winfrey, all proclaiming their love for the designer, as well as a prologue by Ana Wintour that captures the essence of his work: “Oscar completely understands who he is and who he’s dressing (…) He never tried to be avant-garde or difficult. He just does really good clothes, never overtly sexy but attractive, colorful and feminine.”

“The Style, Inspiration, and Life of Oscar de la Renta” is now available at Assouline stores and Oscar de la Renta boutiques worldwide, as well as online.
