J. Mendel and Enoc Perez team up for a limited edition book

Gilles Mendel, creative director of the luxury brand J. Mendel, and Puerto Rican artist Enoc Perez met last year in a charity dinner in New York and what began as a friendly conversation ended up in a designer meets artist collaboration that was sealed with the publication of a book: “Gilles Mendel by Enoc Perez”. The limited edition book showcases the world of J Mendel according to Eco Perez and was inspired by a visit at Mendel’s workroom where Perez took pictures of sketches, fabrics, dress fittings and runway shots that were later on reworked into a series of captivating collages. Enoc Perez, who is famous for his paintings of nudes and modernist architectural icons, came up with the idea to dress up naked models with J Mendel’s creations, in a perfect mix of sensuality and style. The pieces were further deconstructed with the use of crayons, watercolors, oil sticks, Scotch tape and silver leaf. There are also a lot of references to landmark buildings, from the Normandie Hotel in Puerto Rico to the Lever House in New York. “I make a lot of nudes as part of my work, so I thought, why don’t I dress my nudes in Mendel? I was able to overlay images of dresses that I photographed on top of the nudes, and add fabrics (…) I looked for elements and outlines that would unite the images, in terms of what I saw as Gilles’s world … and then I gave everything a little of my own anarchy” Enoc Perez said recently to T magazine.

Gilles Mendel also couldn’t hide his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “I have been a great admirer of Enoc’s work for a long time, so I found it incredibly inspiring to feed him the language of my own world, and watch him interpret it in his own visual medium. What I do is very much about reconciling form and function, but through Enoc’s gaze it can become all about form. The freedom of that was very exciting to me. There’s a lot of overlap in our use of color and composition too, which made our exchange of ideas feel effortless. In many ways, we speak the same language.” he revealed to Blouin Artinfo. The 69-page book launching coincided with the opening of the new J. Mendel store on Madison Avenue in New York last month, where a variety of star guests, including Alek Wek or Ivanka Trump, had the chance to experience firsthand this amazing collaboration.

“Gilles Mendel by Enoc Perez,” $80; available beginning Nov. 18 at J. Mendel, 787 Madison Avenue.
