“Kingsland Road Overture” by Margiela and Lorenzo Vitturi for Dazed & Confuzed

Venice-born photographer Lorenzo Vitturi captures the essence of Maison Martin Margiela’s s/s 2014 Artisanal collection in an editorial for the summer issue of Dazed & Confuzed. The photo shoot is a continuation of Vitturi’s “Dalston Anatomy” series, a collection of surreal portraits and vegetable sculptures that depict the vibrancy of Ridley Road market, an area of east London where the photographer has been living for the last seven years. Inspired by the color frenzy and the crazy aesthetic of the African, Caribbean and Asian food stalls of the market, Venturri reinterpreted the avant-garde spirit of Margiela’s Artisanal collection in a completely new context.

The artist juxtaposed everyday items, like fruit, vegetables, paint, dyes and chalk from Dalston’s pound shops, – which he calls “pop-art destinations” – with Margiela’s wearable pieces of art, made out of scraps, interior fabrics and upholstery depicting the works of renowned artists like Mariano Fortuny or Paul Gauguin. “I wanted to create a unique and abstract visual composition,” says Vitturi, “so you don’t see a difference between the set, the model and the clothes.” The result is one of the most inspiring editorials we have seen lately, a perfect blend of art and fashion and, at the same time, an emotive ode to Ridley Road market that is gradually transformed because of the gentrification. Vitturi, who is the winner of this year’s Photography Prize at the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography, is going to present his “Dalston Anatomy” series in his first ever major exhibition, held at the Photographers’ Gallery, London, between August 1 and October 19, 2014. So if you happen to be around the city, it is definitely worth a visit!
