Louis Vuitton to collaborate with South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga

South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga, known for his exploration of the border zones between fashion, performance and contemporary art, and in particular for his vibrant tapestries that define cultural identity as a hybrid construct, is the latest artist to collaborate with Louis Vuitton. The French luxury brand commissioned Athi-Patra Ruga to create a giant tapestry that will go on display this autumn in the windows of its Champs-Élysées flagship store in Paris. The tapestry will measure about 12 by 12 feet and will be a continuation of the artist’s study on the construction of new identities in a post-colonial Africa, merging sensuality with humor and the empirical with the onirical.

The 30-year-old Ruga, who was born in the Eastern Cape, is the first artist from the African continent to have been commissioned to create an original artwork for Louis Vuitton. To celebrate the occasion, Ruga’s work will also be exhibited at the Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, the art space on the 7th floor of the Champs-Élysées that epitomizes the brand’s longstanding relationship with the arts and promotes emerging talents from all over the world.
