Maison Margiela’s New Flagship Store in Milan

Maison Margiela has opened a new flagship store in Milan’s historic centre, marking the first store opening since John Galliano’s appointment as the house’s new creative director. The boutique spans over 300 square meters, with the ground floor dedicated to womenswear and accessories, while the first floor’s suite is reserved for the house’s “ArtisanalHaute Couture collection and footwear. Maison Margiela collaborated closely with Wood-skin, a Milan-based company that redefines the possibilities of wood in interior design. Wood-skin created for the occasion a very thin, hand-made version of their famous malleable material of the same name, reinterpreting the typical black and white marble pavements with some amazing results.

The fabric-alike material leads, as the architects explain, the visitor smoothly through the store, starting as a floor and then transformed into a counter, a tiled curtain and a double height wall. Bringing together modernist lines and classical architectural elements, the all-white store includes imposing Haussmannian ceilings, intricate moldings, leather strips, rough concrete surfaces, mirrored walls that create a feeling of increased light and depth, as well as a series of trompe l’oeil effects that add an inspiring, surreal touch. Paying homage to the trademark deconstructed shapes and bold experimentation of the house, Maison Margiela’s new boutique in Milan is without doubt a jewel of design and architecture.
