Marni pays a unique tribute to Outsider Art

Marni, the ever- inspiring cult fashion brand that maintains a strong relationship with art, has decided to pay tribute to Outsider Art —a term that was introduced by French artist Jean Dubuffet and refers to all forms of art that are created outside of official culture, may it be the mainstream gallery circuit or the established art institutions, by self-taught or disabled artists, mental institution inmates and children. The brand’s pre-fall 2014 collection, as well as the latest issue of Anticamera, Marni’s online magazine that is directed by Carolina Castiglioni, got inspired by Outsider Art’s “borderless creativity and utter refusal of any impossibility”, featuring the works of three different artists that defy the restrictive logics of the art market: Christophe Joubert and Francois-Xavier Tavy-Sacley, from France, and Stefano Favaro, from Italy.

Marni contacted the artists through the associations that represent them, L’Esat Menilmontant, Personimages Association and Osservatorio Outsider Art, and asked them to employ their particular vision and unique vocabulary on the prints and accessories of its pre-fall 2014 collection. The result was an amazing ode to color, positivity and freedom, a stimulating mix of all-over floral prints, abstract patterns and giraffe-esque motifs. The collection was presented in a fantastic installation that looked like a greenhouse, with the artworks that inspired the designs printed on the walls. Marni broke once more the boundaries of conventional thought, giving us the chance to discover a series of artists that are often ignored by the established art system, and proving that when fashion gets outside the box, great things may happen.
