Pharrell covers W Magazine’s annual Art Issue

Grammy Award winning producer, fashion iconoclast and renown art lover Pharrell Williams covers the latest Art Issue of W magazine. W commissioned 5 of the most critically acclaimed contemporary artists to create some exclusive pieces inspired by Pharrell’s personality, paying tribute to the atist’s close relationship with art (in his private collection one can find pieces by Kaws or Takashi Murakami). Urs Fischer, Mr., JR and Rob Pruitt offered their personal take on Pharrell’s creative universe and the result is simply amazing. Rob Pruitt created a couch covered in Pharrell-inspired marker doodles, Urs Fischer reworked a photo by Joshua White using a bent metal coil, while Mr. transformed Pharrell into a quirky cartoon figure. Pharrell, who revealed to W that he likes the idea of being a character in someone else’s story, also posed for a portrait session with 86-year old artist Alex Katz: “He talked about art and music—in that order—while he sketched,” Pharrell explained. “And I was thinking about music and art in that order. We understood each other in parallels.”

W Art Issue comes just ahead of Pharrell’s first ever art exhibition, titled “GIRL”, which is going to be held at Emmanuel Perrotin’s new art space in Paris, the Salle de Bal, from May 27 to June 25, 2014. Coinciding with the release of Pharrell’s same-titled album, “GIRL” exhibition features more than 40 works, some curated and others commissioned, by artists of the likes of Marina Abramovic, Sophie Calle, Laurent Grasso, Daniel Arsham, Gregor Hildebrandt, KAWS, Cindy Sherman and Tracy Emin.

The special edition of W will be packaged with the publication’s June/July edition and will be available on newsstands on May 27.
