Pirelli calendar 50th anniversary book by Taschen

Taschen celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary Pirelli Calendar with a new, 576 page retrospective book that reproduces the complete calendars, including photos of the most beautiful women of the world, among them Gisele Bündchen, Helena Christensen, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Laetitia Casta, Cindy Crawford, Alessandra Ambrosio, Milla Jovovich, Heidi Klum, Miranda Kerr, Guinevere van Seenus, Isabeli Fontana and Kate Moss. The Pirelli Calendar was conceived back in 1964, in the Pirelli’s offices in London, and was initially reserved for important clients, close friends and VIPs. Its clever mix of elegant sensuality, exotic locations like Seychelles or Rio de Janeiro, innovative stylistic approaches and the world’s most renowned photographers, from Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh and Bruce Weber to Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz, Terry Richardson and Mario Testino, defied the norms of the time and eventually changed the standards of erotic photography.

Taschen takes us on an extraordinary journey through time, casting light on how Pirelli’s annual publication, known also as “the Cal”, came to become from a simple garage calendar to a pop culture phenomenon, stirring passions among collectors, fashion addicts and art lovers. The comprehensive tome features rare, behind-the-scenes images of the shoots, the unpublished 1963 calendar and a selection of “censored” images that were considered too risky to publish by the editors of the time. What’s more, it includes an introduction by writer, art dealer and art historian Philippe Daverio, and an interview with Pirelli calendar art directors Derek Forsyth and Martyn Walsh. “They took a humble garage calendar and magically turned it around into the most desirable object for the jet set, the glamour set,Benedikt Taschen, of the publishing house, said to The New York Times. “And it is the hottest ticket for any photographer working today.” The Pirelli Calendar 50th anniversary book is now available to pre-order at Taschen’s website and is expected to ship in August 2015.
