“The World of Rick Owens” takes over Selfridges

Selfridges celebrates Rick Owens’ 20 years in fashion with “The World of Rick Owens”, a storewide installation that casts light on his extraordinary career. “The World of Rick Owens” includes two temporary men’s and women’s wear corners, as well as four window displays, three of them inspired by Owens’ favorite opera, Richard Strauss’ Salomé, and the fourth featuring an artistic staircase made of black wood. A unique concept store will be installed in Selfridges’ Wonder Room, with books, music, furniture and tableware, including pieces from Owens’ furniture line, artworks by Georges Hoentschel, Jayne County’s autobiography and records by Klaus Nomi, David Bowie and Iggy Pop, all curated by the designer himself. “It’s the music that inspired me, the books that moved me and the art that I’m fascinated with, old and new,” told the American-born designer, famous for his glamour-meets-grunge style, to WWD.

Rick Owens has also designed for the occasion a limited edition, 20-piece capsule collection under his DRKSHDW line, including T-shirts, leather jackets, sweaters, tunics and sneakers, which will be available online, as well as at various Selfridges stores. Last, but not least, an impressive, 25-foot statue will be installed atop Selfridges’ Oxford Street location, depicting Owens’ naked torso and made in collaboration with figurative sculptor Doug Jennings, who has created in the past similar sculptures for Owens’ stores. The 1.5 ton figure took 12 weeks to build and is holding a flame-burning torch that will ignite every 15 minutes, 12 hours a day, for the duration of the project.

“The World of Rick Owens” is the “biggest single designer concept that Selfridges has initiated”” according to Sebastian Manes, Selfridges’ buying director. The installation forms part of “The Masters”, a major autumn-winter 2014 creative project that celebrates the work of twelve designers that are shaping the fashion landscape today. The Selfridges initiative features exclusive archival pieces, specially commissioned products, Oxford Street dedicated windows, inspired by a film narrative or genre, as well as a series of short films in collaboration with SHOWstudio.

Rick Owens was proclaimed “Master of the Elements”, along with Azzedine Alaïa, “The Master of Architecture”, Dries Van Noten, “The Master of the Eclectic”, Jean Paul Gaultier, “The Master of Expression”, Jun Takahashi of Undercover, “The Master of Subversion”, Marc Jacobs, “The Master of Mood”, Oscar de la Renta, “The Master of Elegance”, Paul Smith, “The Master of Inspiration”, Roberto Cavalli, “The Master of Glamour”, Thom Browne, “The Master of Showmanship”, Stella McCartney, “The Master of Modernity”, and Yohji Yamamoto, “The Master of Defiance”.

“The World of Rick Owens” will remain on view at Selfridges until Oct 24, 2014.
